Program formats

Five standard formats

Here “ceremony” means a structured group session with music and facilitation — no substances are administered.

  • 90 min – 3 hrs

    Single group session

Opening circle, active breathing, rest and a sharing circle — the usual entry point for first-timers.

  • Half or full day

    Day immersion

Breathwork combined with meditation, sound healing, cold exposure or gentle movement.

  • 3 days

    3-day program

Multiple sessions with rest days, journaling and one-on-one check-ins; residential or not.

  • 5–7 days

    Residential retreat

Daily practice, plant-based meals, accommodation and structured integration support before departure.

  • 1:1 or couples

    Private session

One-on-one facilitation for guests who prefer privacy or a trauma-sensitive setting.

Common styles: conscious-connected, holotropic-style, pranayama-based and Wim Hof-inspired. A reputable operator matches you to a format on your health intake, not on price.

Contraindications

Is breathwork safe? Read this first

Fast, deep breathing changes blood chemistry and can cause dizziness, tingling, cramping (tetany) and intense emotions. These usually pass — but breathwork isn’t for everyone.

See a physician before booking if you have

  • Heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, past heart attack, stroke or aneurysm
  • Epilepsy or a history of seizures
  • Pregnancy
  • Glaucoma or retinal detachment
  • Severe asthma or another significant respiratory condition
  • Bipolar disorder, psychosis, severe PTSD or another psychiatric diagnosis
  • Recent major surgery or injury

Facilitator standards

What we ask operators to prove

Breathwork is unregulated in most countries, so quality varies widely. We ask for evidence before referring anyone.

  1. 01

    Formal certification

A substantial training program, typically 200+ hours, from an established school — not a weekend workshop.

  2. 02

    Written health intake

Heart, neurological, psychiatric and pregnancy questions — and a documented willingness to decline contraindicated guests.

  3. 03

    Trauma-informed, well staffed

Trained to handle strong emotional release; assistants for larger groups so no one breathes unsupervised.

  4. 04

No cure claims, real emergency plan

No marketing breathwork as a cure, plus a medical-assistance plan near a clinic or hospital.

Questions

Breathwork questions, answered

Read all 100 questions

Is breathwork legal in Bali?

Yes. It involves no substances, so it sits entirely outside Indonesia’s narcotics law — unlike psilocybin or ayahuasca ceremonies, which remain illegal however they are framed.

Do I need prior experience to join?

No. Group sessions and day immersions are designed for beginners, but every reputable operator requires full disclosure of your health history on the intake form.

Can breathwork replace medical or mental-health treatment?

No — it is a wellness practice, not a treatment for any condition. Don’t stop prescribed medication or therapy for a retreat; speak with your physician first.

How far in advance should I book?

A few days is usually enough for single sessions. For residential retreats, book two to six weeks ahead — earlier for July–August and December–January.
